Artist's sketchbooks are usually very precious to them. They are often very personal , like a diary, a place where they can work things out and make mistakes, very different to the studio painting. They are a rcord of the real experience. I think it is something similar to a recording of a concert you went to; complete with the applause, the coughing and maybe a few duff notes ....rather than a perfect studio recording.
